The history of UTM began in 1904 once a school began operation on Weld Road (now Jalan Raja Chulan) to show Technical Assistants for the united Malay States Departments of Railways, Survey and structure. the varsity was referred to as Treacher school , named once Sir William Treacher, the Resident General. Students took categories on part-time basis; they worked and trained per the technical desires of their employment.

In 1941 the consultative Committee of Technical colleges suggested that school be elevated to varsity standing and planned that a replacement technical college be created. The new faculty was to be designed on a 47-acre piece of state land in stretcher Road (now Jalan Semarak), Malaysian capital. Plans for the development of the school, however, were placed on hold once warfare II erupted in solid ground Malaysia
In the early years, the technical faculty conducted engineering courses at certificate level in applied science, engineering science, Electrical and Radio Engineering, Land measuring, Building design and Quality measuring, whereas a special in Automobile Engineering was offered for the transportation social control officers. The registration for the 1958/1959 academic term was 320 students.

In 1960 the school began a replacement era by upgrading its engineering courses to the degree level. Student following courses at the school weekday for skilled examinations conducted by the establishment of Civil Engineers and establishment of Mechanical Engineers, uk & the Royal Institute of British Architects, furthermore because the Royal Institute of leased Surveyors. Students for the skilled courses were drawn from government servants for the Federation of Asian country Singapore, island and Brunei. Minimum entry needs then were Grade I & II within the Cambridge college Certificate or the Malayan college Certificate with credits in English & Basic arithmetic. Priorities got to people who obtained credits in Science subjects.
On March fourteen, 1972, Malaysia’s Ruler, DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda rule Dipertuan Agong declared the formation of Institut Teknologi Kebangsaan (ITK) below section 6 of the University & University faculty Act 1971. The establishment genetic all the amenities and facilities of the previous Technical faculty of stretcher Road. Mr. Ainuddin Abdul Wahid WHO was the principal of Technical faculty was created the primary clergyman of ITK. Associate in Nursing interim Council consisting of 9 members was tasked to plan the key policies to be enforced within the new institution. 3 body positions were conjointly formalized: the Registrar, the treasurer and also the Chief professional
On one April 1975, the journey from college to school was completed once the establishment became Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

In 1976, the govt. approved the university constitution and also the university Senate and Council were established.

As of the 1975/1976 school year, the UTM college of Engineering split into the colleges of Civil, Mechanical and engineering colleges. The 3 colleges at the side of the school of designed atmosphere and school of measuring, and the Centre for Science for Science Students and Centre for arts Students became the precursors of most tutorial programmes in UTM these days. By 1976, the scholar population had reached a pair of,593 with 1,745 pursing certificate level studies, 607 within the degree programmes, and 241 within the integrated programmes.

On Dec three, 1977, UTM witnessed its 1st cluster of sixty five graduates being given their degrees within the inaugural convocation ceremony in Malaysian capital, graced by the Royal Highness Almarhum grand Turk Ismail Ibni Almarhum grand Turk patriarch, the primary Chancellor of UTM
The university rapt to a replacement field set on a pair of,400 acres of land in Skudai, Johor. Construction works had begun in 1978 and also the field opened on Sept sixteen, 1985 by His stateliness grand Turk Iskandar Ibni Almarhum grand Turk Ismail, then the rule di Pertuan Agong, in his capability as his capability because the second Chancellor of UTM.

UTM's has regional and international tutorial collaborations., together with Intel, Altera, and Proton.
